Painting: Doherty

Fitter to Invent Than to Judge

Joseph David Doherty

I have lived in the Midwest all my life and find it to be a large influence on my work. Alternating rural and urban spaces direct the course of my work. My paintings function as a form of image-remembrance, in which ambiguous spaces feel familiar yet emotionally distant. This concept of image-remembrance is reflected in the relationship of transition and memory within my paintings. The use of the painted figure presents a tension between identity and doubt. The environments within the work possess a past and create the possibility of change.
